The Day You Became a Stranger
Today something happened that I knew was coming, but somehow still wasn't prepared for.
He changed his WhatsApp profile picture.
I don't know why this mattered so much to me. Maybe because, for over a year, a tiny part of me kept wondering when it would happen. Every now and then I'd check, almost without thinking. Not because I expected him to come back. Not because I was waiting for a message. I think I just knew that one day the last visible trace of "us" would disappear.
The strange part is... when it finally happened, I wasn't even sad that he removed our picture.
If I'm being honest, it almost felt odd that he had kept it for so long.
What shattered me wasn't the fact that he changed it.
It was the picture he changed it to.
I stared at it for a long time.
My first thought wasn't, "He looks good."
It wasn't even, "He moved on."
It was...
Who is that?
I don't know that man.
And maybe that's what made me cry.
He looked so different that it almost felt like I was looking at a complete stranger. I don't just mean physically. There was something about the whole picture that felt unfamiliar to me. Heavy. Almost unsettling. I can't even explain it. Maybe no one else would see what I saw. Maybe it's just because I knew him in a way strangers never did.
But my heart immediately went back years.
Before we got married, there was a season of his life I didn't fully understand. Looking at this picture reminded me of that time. I don't know if that's what's happening now, and I refuse to pretend I know something I don't.
I just know my heart became concerned.
I prayed for him tonight.
I truly did.
Not because I want him back.
Not because I suddenly forgot everything that happened.
I prayed because once upon a time, I loved this man with my whole heart. I wanted him to become the father of my children, to grow old beside me, to become a saint with me. Those prayers don't simply disappear because a marriage falls apart.
What surprised me the most, though, wasn't him.
It was me.
I thought the day he changed his picture I'd cry because he removed the last picture of us.
Instead, I cried because I realized... I don't recognize him anymore.
Somewhere between our wedding day and today, the man I thought I married disappeared. Or maybe I never truly knew him at all. I honestly don't know which one hurts more.
I also have this strange feeling that he knew I would eventually see the picture. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm right. At this point, I don't think it changes much. What goes through his mind isn't something I can answer anymore.
And maybe that's one of the hardest things I've had to accept.
I don't know him anymore.
Maybe I never did.
Tonight reminded me that grief doesn't always come because we want someone back.
Sometimes grief comes because we finally realize the person we've been grieving no longer exists in the way we remembered them.
And somehow...
That feels like saying goodbye all over again. 💜
