The Silence Became an Answer

The Silence Became an Answer

There was a time when silence felt unbearable.

Every day that passed without hearing from him felt like another question waiting to be answered. I used to wonder what he was thinking, whether he missed me, whether he was angry, whether he was too proud to reach out, or whether he was simply waiting for the right moment. My mind could build an entire story from a single unanswered text, a missed call, or the absence of one.

Silence was never just silence.

It was possibility.

It was hope.

It was fear.

It was imagination filling in every blank space with a story that usually hurt me more than reality ever could.

Looking back now, I realize how much energy I spent trying to interpret what wasn't actually being said. I treated silence as if it were a puzzle I had to solve. If I could just understand it correctly, maybe I would finally understand him.

But silence doesn't always hide an answer.

Sometimes...

it is the answer.

That doesn't mean I know what was in his heart. I don't. I don't know what he thought. I don't know what he regretted. I don't know what he justified. I don't know what he buried. Those things belong to God.

What I do know is much simpler.

Life kept moving.

Days became weeks.

Weeks became months.

Months became a year.

And during that year, I raised our son. I watched him learn new words, take new steps, laugh at new things. I launched the podcast I had dreamed about for years. I built a website. I filled hidden pages with journal entries that slowly became a conversation between God and me. I cried. I healed. I rested. I stumbled. I got back up again.

Life didn't wait for clarity.

It simply continued.

I think I used to believe that closure would arrive through one final conversation. One day he would finally understand me, I would finally understand him, and somehow everything would settle into place.

Now I'm not so sure.

Because the strangest thing happened.

Without that conversation...

my life kept becoming fuller.

Not because I stopped loving overnight.

Not because I suddenly became indifferent.

But because God kept giving me something to build instead of something to chase.

The silence that once felt like punishment slowly became space.

Space to think.

Space to grieve.

Space to become honest with myself.

Space to notice how much of my identity had quietly revolved around waiting.

I don't think I was waiting for him as much as I was waiting for permission to move forward.

As if somewhere inside me I believed my life couldn't fully begin until he either came back or definitively closed the door.

But life doesn't work that way.

God doesn't ask us to wait outside of our own lives while someone else decides whether to walk back into them.

He invites us to keep walking.

Sometimes I still wonder about him.

Sometimes I still pray for him.

Sometimes I still miss the man I believed I married.

But those moments no longer stop my life.

They simply pass through it.

And maybe that's what healing has quietly been doing all along.

Not removing the memories.

Not erasing the love.

Not pretending the marriage never mattered.

Just teaching me that silence no longer has the authority to define my future.

Only God does.

And somehow...

that has become enough.
